Even when the most extraordinary things are occurring around the periphery of your life, you still have to take care of normal tasks like feeding the cat and shopping for groceries.

That was the conclusion Verity Thayer had come to as she pushed her cart around the market one quiet Thursday morning.

It had been two weeks since Alastair Stone had dropped his latest extraordinary bombshell on her, Jason, and Amber, and her ears were still metaphorically ringing from it.

It had been shocking enough when they’d found out that dragons—literal dragons, even if they were stuck in human form because the magic wasn’t strong enough for them to go full giant lizard—existed right here on Earth, and Stone had not only known about them but had been hanging out with them for years. That was one of those pieces of information that had to hit anyone hard, even supernatural veterans like Verity and the others.

But recently, Stone had shared another revelation with them—one that had made “the existence of dragons on Earth” seem like a routine news broadcast about the weather by comparison.

He and one of these dragons had mated, and produced a child.

A half-dragon daughter.

Never a dull moment around Alastair Stone, that was for sure.

Verity and the others hadn’t met the baby yet, and they weren’t sure if they would get to, since her dragon mother put protective human moms to shame, but Stone had been understandably distracted the last couple of weeks.

The only time they had seen him was when he’d arranged a meeting between himself the three of them a few days after he’d told them about the baby, as well as the dragon trial he’d have to go through for telling them about dragons in the first place, to give them an update. The trial was over and he wasn’t in trouble anymore, as long as all of them would agree to swear a magical oath to Madame Huan that they wouldn’t reveal the dragons’ existence to anyone else. They’d all agreed readily, especially after they were assured the oath would do nothing more than prevent them from speaking of the subject to anyone outside their small group. It wasn’t like they’d intended to, anyway.

Madame Huan had administered the oath and life had continued. Stone continued to be busy and mostly out of touch, so gradually Jason and Amber had returned to splitting their time between their two children and Thayer Investigations, and Verity had gone back to alchemy, running the Apothecary with Hezzie, and hanging out with her cat, Luna.

Today was the first one she’d taken off from work since all this had happened. As she pushed her cart around the funky little market near her San Francisco loft apartment, tossing items in almost by rote, she let her mind wander wherever it wanted to go. She didn’t get that luxury often these days.

“Oh, excuse me,” said a voice in front of her.

She jerked her head up. A man stood in front of her in the narrow aisle, blocking her way forward.
